Several factors affect lifespan, and each of them can cut battery life in half:

  • short city trips — the alternator doesn’t fully recharge the battery after starting;

  • frost — at –20°C a battery can lose up to 50% of its capacity;

  • heat — high temperatures dry out the electrolyte and speed up aging;

  • heavy electrical load while parked — cameras, alarms, dashcams running constantly;

  • Start-Stop systems with a wrong battery type instead of AGM/EFB — failure within a year;

  • faulty alternator or voltage regulator — undercharging or overcharging damages cells.

In cars imported from the USA that stood for months at ports or storage lots, the battery is often already half-dead — the first frost finishes it off. Symptoms of a worn-out battery

In short: weak starting, dim lights, clicking starter noise, and low-voltage warnings are classic symptoms. If you notice 2–3 of them, replace the battery before it leaves you stranded.

Most common signs:

  • engine cranks slower than usual;

  • rapid “click-click-click” sound when turning the key;

  • headlights dim when turning on ventilation or starting the car;

  • dashboard shows low voltage or Start-Stop errors;

  • electronics reset (radio, seat memory, climate settings);

  • swollen battery case or corrosion on terminals;

  • resting voltage below 12.4V (healthy battery is 12.6–12.8V).

The most reliable check is a load test at a workshop — it takes seconds and gives a clear answer. If the battery is 4+ years old and shows symptoms, don’t delay.

How to choose a car battery?

In short: match capacity (Ah), cold cranking amps (A), dimensions, polarity, and type (standard, EFB, AGM). The easiest way is to copy the old battery or use VIN.

Key factors:

  • Capacity (Ah) — typically 60–80 Ah for passenger cars, 80–110 Ah for SUVs and diesels, 90–110 Ah for cars with heavy electronics;

  • Starting current (CCA) — 600–800A is a solid standard for diesel engines;

  • Size and terminal layout (P+ / L+) — must match exactly;

  • Technology type — standard lead-acid, EFB, or AGM depending on Start-Stop system.

In American cars (Ford, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Cadillac, Chevrolet, etc.), battery sizes often follow BCI Group standards (24, 35, 48, 65), so checking compatibility is essential.

AGM or EFB battery — which to choose?

In short: AGM for advanced Start-Stop systems with energy recovery, EFB for basic Start-Stop, and standard batteries for cars without Start-Stop.

EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) is an improved version of a classic lead-acid battery — more charge cycles, but still liquid electrolyte. Suitable for basic Start-Stop systems.

AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) uses electrolyte absorbed in fiberglass mats — more durable, deeper discharge resistance, and supports full Start-Stop with regenerative braking. It is standard in modern BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Volvo, Porsche, and Land Rover vehicles.

Rule: AGM can replace EFB, but EFB cannot replace AGM.

How to charge a car battery correctly?

In short: use a smart charger, ideally 10–15% of battery capacity (e.g. 6–8A for a 60Ah battery). Jump-starting is only an emergency solution.

Key rules:

  • use a smart charger, especially for AGM batteries;

  • full charge from 50% takes 6–10 hours;

  • AGM batteries are maintenance-free — no water refilling;

  • standard batteries may require electrolyte level checks;

  • in modern cars (BMW, Mercedes, Audi), battery registration is required after replacement;

  • connect jumper cables to ground, not directly to the negative terminal.

If the car is left unused for long periods, use a maintenance charger (CTEK, NOCO) to extend battery life.
